Technology Bloggers - April 2007

Fashion & Technology

April 29th 2007 18:53
Sorry to have been sidetracked from the blog by road trips, flu, a heat wave, and a puppy shredding my index fingers with stalactite teeth, whose demise I am promised will be followed by blunter adult teeth, used more appropriately.

Anina is an interesting tech blog from the fashion world (the link has a blurb on a wonderful looking upcoming Australian fashion show). Take a look, you might enjoy...

Search Engine Optimization

Gold Boxes

"Search engine optimization (SEO), a subset of search engine marketing, is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO can also target specialized searches such as image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines." (Wikipedia)

So why care?
Business Week, in an article dated April 30th, 2007, isn't today the 23rd??, talks about Omniture.

"Omniture gives Hyatt one place where it can internally manage all of its keyword campaigns. Hyatt previously could only see the rate at which customers clicked on a search advertisement; now Omniture shows the conversion rate, or number of consumers who actually make a purchase based on a search ad. "It has dramatically changed the funding for each of the keywords and categories we buy," says Hyatt's director of e-commerce, Greg Johnston. "We are saving hundreds of thousands of dollars."
"SPEND, SPEND, SPEND
That's fueling Google-like growth, albeit from a far smaller base. In 2006, Omniture sales shot up 86%, compared with 73% for Google; this year, analysts expect Omniture to grow 66%, to $132 million."

For basics, or as a refresher course, Pandia has numerous well-written articles about promoting your site through common-sense and diligence. Still, there are many ads for paid companies providing the same services that the articles discuss, and sometime the layout of the site is cluttered, so that you aren't sure which column to look in, or what link to follow in order to finish the story you are reading. I'm sure this is innocent, and not an attempt to improve numbers on pages click through...

Darren Rouse at www.problogger.net as usual, bless him, uses his blog to inform as well as act as a moderately voiced cheerleader for bloggers everywhere...
(what's with the gold boxes in the picture? I just liked them, but there must be a metaphor somewhere

Unfaithful To Google

April 2nd 2007 16:53
Let me be clear, please, give me a moment.

I have a devoted relationship with Google. I loved Google before many other people had heard of it.

I love Google docs, news, and am working on building a relationship with adsense.

I respect what Google has done to improve my life
.

But, there are other search engines...

Lately, I've been revisiting yahoo, and, sometimes, killerinfo. Sometimes, I just can't find what I need at home with google. Sometimes, what I need is elsewhere.
With another search engine.

I still love google. Love has nothing to do with it. I have an urgent need. The need must be fulfilled. This does not make me a bad person.

So, I was out on the town and happened to come across Read Write Web. It started innocently. I just read a column. But then, I saw a list of alternative search engines.

I'm going back. I'm going to try them. They might have what I need.

I'll always come home to google. This is where my heart is. Straying once in awhile, just to be a complete person, true to my needs, does not mean I don't know the road home. This is not the end, it's just a little breathing space. It's not you google, it's me.
